California Statute of Limitations Calculator
Enter the date something happened and see the California filing deadline for that type of claim. Missing a statute of limitations bars even a strong case, and the deadlines are shorter than most people expect.
What this covers
- Personal injury and wrongful death: two years from the injury (Code of Civil Procedure section 335.1)
- Property damage: three years (section 338)
- Written contracts: four years (section 337). Oral contracts: two years (section 339)
- Fraud: three years from discovery (section 338(d))
- Claims against a public entity: a government claim within six months (Government Code section 911.2)
- Medical malpractice: one year from discovery, three years from injury (section 340.5)
The calculator is an estimate. Tolling, delayed discovery, and claims against public entities change the answer, so confirm any deadline with an attorney before relying on it.
